Due to no confirmed reports of sighting of the Hilaal, the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA), determined that in South Africa, Dhu al Hijjah 1444 will end with 30 days on Wednesday 19 Jul 2023. It follows then that 1st Muharram 1445 corresponds to Thursday, 20 Jul 2023. The Day of Aashurah (10 Muharram) will therefore be on 29 Jul 2023, in-sha-Allah.

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa’s Central Hilaal Committee acts on behalf of UUCSA in the coordination of the sighting of the moon. The next sighting of the moon for the determination of the start of Safar 1445 shall be after sunset on Monday 17 Aug 2023. At sunset in Johannesburg, the Hilâl will be 30 Hours 06 Minutes, in-sha-Allah.
