JUSA Relief Revamps Johannesburg Hospitals
On Wednesday, JUSA Relief handed over a revamped Mother Lodger Facility attached to the Neonatal Ward of the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
The need to revamp the facility was identified as a way of improving the care and experience of new mothers as they stay in hospital, waiting for their newly-born babies receiving treatment in the paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU/NICU), within the Neonatal Unit. The lodger facility is the first of its kind in catering for the needs of new mothers, post-delivery.
Among other things, the Mother Lodger Facility has received appliances such as a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a washing machine, a tumble dryer and an assortment of pieces of furniture, including tables, chairs and beds.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday 22nd April 2025, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital (RMMCH) inaugurated the newly refurbished section of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which includes a nursing station, a counselling room, ablution facilities of the Gynaecological Wards 9 and 10.
The extensive renovation work at RMMCH included complete re-flooring with vinyl tiling, installation of cabinet units, plumbing works and painting of the walls. In carrying out this work JUSA Relief received generous support from TotalEnergies, Lubes Direct, Birth on 5th and the Islamic Careline.
The RMMCH is located in Coronationville, to the west of Johannesburg and it is under the jurisdiction of the provincial Department of Health in Gauteng. With an annual baby delivery rate standing between 14000 and 17000, it is one of the busiest hospitals in the region and second only to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, in Soweto.
The maternity hospital which has a bed occupancy exceeding hundred per cent, celebrated 80 years of service last year, with an ever-increasing number of challenges of capacity and ageing equipment and infrastructure.
During 2023, JUSA Relief renovated the ante-natal ward at RMMCH. The refurbishment work was aimed at lightening up the atmosphere in the hospital, and bringing comfort to mothers as well as healthcare-givers. Two wards, a triage room, awaiting room and a lobby in the neo-natal ward were among the sections that underwent the revamp. Additionally, JUSA Relief supplied electronic maternity delivery beds as well as specialised stretcher-beds for use during emergencies, among other medical equipment.
JUSA Relief appreciates the generosity of the community in making it possible to make such interventions, for the benefit of the general public, and looks forward to continued support, in order to reach more public amenities in need similar interventions.
