Developments and Public Concerns ahead of Mass Action Planned for June 30

AN UUCSA PUBLIC STATEMENT

(For Immediate Release)

The United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) notes the heightened public mobilisation and discourse surrounding 30 June 2026, and the growing concerns within communities across the country.

UUCSA states unequivocally that the preservation of life, dignity, and public order is non-negotiable. Any action— whether organised or spontaneous, that gives rise to violence, intimidation, vigilantism, or the targeting of any community— is firmly rejected.

At the same time, UUCSA recognises that widespread socio-economic grievances—including unemployment, crime, and pressure on public resources— have contributed to public frustration. These concerns are legitimate and, in many instances, deeply felt by ordinary South Africans, and they require urgent, lawful, and structured intervention by the relevant authorities and other stakeholders.

UUCSA further affirms that the right to protest and to express grievances is a constitutionally protected democratic right. Such expression must, however, remain peaceful, lawful, and must not infringe upon the rights, safety, or dignity of others.

In this context, UUCSA emphasises that any public action on 30 June must remain strictly within the bounds of the law and must not compromise the safety and security of any individual or community. There can be no justification for lawlessness or the erosion of social stability.

UUCSA calls on all communities to act with restraint, vigilance, and responsibility during this period. Religious institutions, civic bodies, and community structures are encouraged to take proactive measures to safeguard lives, property, and neighbourhoods, while contributing to calm and stability.

We further call on leaders across society to engage constructively with local stakeholders, including law enforcement and civic bodies, to mitigate risks and prevent escalation. The responsibility to protect life and uphold justice must remain paramount.

Meanwhile, UUCSA will continue its engagements with relevant stakeholders in the interest of promoting safety, stability, and social cohesion across all communities.

We ask Allah Ta‘ālā to protect our country, avert harm, and guide us towards justice, stability, and unity.
