Municipal Elections 2021 | Register to Vote

You are the best nation evolved for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allâh… (Âl-‘Imrân, Âyah 110).

One of the most-emphasised aspects of governance is people-participation. Acceptability of any government, whether at local or national level, hinges on the level of its engagement with citizenry. The starting point of this engagement is through election of leaders who would serve in the interest of the public.

Electing political representatives through voting is not only a right but also a responsibility to ensure that the leadership and management of our country are vested in people who subscribe to principles of honesty, justice, and compassion.

It is our contribution as citizens of South Africa towards preserving a democracy that roots out corruption, prioritises service delivery and promotes socio-economic development. Voting is effectively an investment in our own future and an attempt preserve and promote the common good of our nation.

Participation in municipal elections is important and has a bearing on the issues that affect us, on a day-to-day basis, within our localities, neighbourhood and communities. Raeed N Tayeh, author of A Muslim’s Guide to American Politics and Government and a former Congressional Staffer wrote:

…If you can’t get the city council to change the zoning laws to expand your parking lot, you will never help your people in Palestine achieve justice. As the saying goes “All Politics is Local!” If you are not doing what is necessary at home, I cannot do what is necessary in Washington. Together, we can change the policies of this country for the better in-sha- ‘Allâh…
