Moonsighting: Start of Muharram 1442

There were a number of confirmed reports of the sighting of the new crescent this evening, in several places in South Africa. This means that the month of Dhu al Hijjah as well as  the year 1441 of the Hijri calendar have ended on Thursday 20 August 2020.

Consequently, the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) determined that the 1st of Muharram 1442 corresponds to Friday 21 August 2020.

It follows then that the auspicious Day of Aashura will therefore be on Sunday 30 August, 2020, in-sha-Allah.

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa’s Central Hilaal Committee acts on behalf of UUCSA in the coordination of the sighting of the moon.

In the light and spirit of the Sunnah, we appeal to jamaats to go out and seek the sighting of the new moon every month. The next sighting of the moon for the determining the start of Safar 1441 shall be after sunset on Friday 18 September 2020, in-sha-Allah.

Wassalaam.
