Help Shape South Africa’s History Curriculum

AN UUCSA URGENT CALL TO ACTION

Introduction

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has extended the public comment period on the draft History Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS). This is a rare and critical opportunity for the Muslim community of South Africa to ensure that our history – and the diverse contributions of Muslims to this nation – is recognised and included. Your voice is important and needed.

Why This Matters

Currently, the draft curriculum risks omitting or underrepresenting the role of Muslim leaders, community institutions, and activists in the struggle against colonialism and apartheid, as well as the broader shaping of South African society.

In an official submission to the DBE, the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) has outlined key areas that require stronger treatment and they include:

  • The role of political exiles, enslaved people, indentured labourers, and migrant workers— many of whom were Muslims— in shaping our nation;
  • Community-based educational, ethical, and social institutionsthat fostered literacy, social cohesion, and resilience;
  • Religious leaders, activists, and local communitiesin resistance movements, and
  • Neglected local case studiesthat reveal the rich, and inclusive nature of South African history.

What You Can Do, Right Now

  1. Write a brief submission(even 2–3 paragraphs help) to the DBE, highlighting one or more of the following:
  • A Muslim personality or leader who contributed to the struggle (e.g., Imam Abdullah Haron, Sheikh Yusuf of Macassar, Fatima Meer, or local figures from your community);
  • A masjid, madrasa, or Muslim social institution that played a role in community resilience or education;
  • A local historical event involving Muslims that should be taught in schools.
