Escalating Tensions: Afrophobia and Violence
UUCSA MEDIA STATEMENT
(For Immediate Release)
The United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) expresses grave concern over the rise in incidents xenophobia, Afrophobia, and violence across the country. We unequivocally condemn the targeting of fellow Africans as morally indefensible and contrary to our constitutional values and shared humanity.
While illegal migration is a serious and complex issue requiring lawful government action, it can never justify violence or vigilantism. Such challenges must be addressed through proper legal processes, not mob justice.
UUCSA calls for calm, restraint, and respect for the rule of law. Communities must not take justice into their own hands. Though socio-economic hardships like unemployment and inequality are real, targeting vulnerable groups only deepens division.
Islam affirms the sanctity of human life and the dignity of all people. Diversity is meant to foster understanding, not hostility. We strongly condemn all acts of violence, intimidation, xenophobia, Afrophobia and incitement.
We urge government to act decisively to restore order, ensure accountability, and manage migration effectively. We also call on religious leaders, civil society, and communities to promote dialogue, ease tensions, and rebuild trust.
South Africa must choose unity, justice, and compassion over fear and division. May Allah protect our country, guide our leaders, and unite our people in peace and justice.
