Condemnation of an Attack at a Masjid in Mogale City
A PRESS STATEMENT
The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa (JUSA) received disheartening news of, and seriously condemns, an attack on congregants at a Masjid Taaleemuddin in Rietvallei Ext 2, in Mogale City.
As a report reached us on Wednesday, a group of eight, attacked a member of the congregation as he was coming out of the masjid premises, demanding that he surrenders his mobile phone to them. The victim was assaulted and sustained multiple stab wounds. As he tried to flee and seek refuge in the masjid, three more congregants were attacked and left with stab wounds, as they came to his assistance.
With much trepidation, a day later, JUSA notes that arrests have yet to be made, even if the identities of the eight assailants— said to have been in possession of a gun at the scene— are known in the community.
JUSA appeals to members of the community to be vigilant, and the South African Police Service (SAPS), to ensure that the assailants are brought to book for this brazen incident of violence.
As we always advocate, a masjid, just like any other place of worship, is sacred and a sanctuary for all members of the community, as a place of retreat, in prayers and devotions. Together with its surroundings, it should be preserved as a protected zone that remains sanctified and safe for the community, at all times.
Meanwhile, JUSA wishes all the four victims of the attack— one of whom is an elderly person— quick recovery from their injuries some of which were serious.
