UUCSA STATEMENT | Sovereignty through Freedom and Dignity

A Congratulatory Message to President Cyril Ramaphosa and Government, on the Occasion of Delivering a Successful 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit

A PRESS STATEMENT

The United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) joins South Africans in congratulating President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Government, for hosting a very successful 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit which took place between 22nd and 23rd November 2025.

President Ramaphosa’s Administration’s diplomatic acumen has made not only South Africa but the whole of the region, and the continent proud, by delivering on a historic first G20 Summit on the African soil.

While detractors made all attempts to scuttle the success of the event, under the aegis of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and all other stakeholders, inclusive and mature African diplomacy prevailed, and the Summit’s Johannesburg Declaration earned endorsements of all participating nations, in record time.

UUCSA applauds President Ramaphosa for his unflinching resolve in carrying the mantle of leadership in the spirit encapsulated by Frantz Fanon, the leading anti-colonialist thinker of the twentieth century, who wrote: “The African peoples were quick to realize that dignity and sovereignty were exact equivalents, and in fact, a free people living in dignity is a sovereign people.”

As UUCSA, we recognise that much of the trepidation with South Africa, which is evident through Super Power intimidatory overtures, emanates from the principled stance the country has taken, in international relations. Where the leading nations of the world no longer want to abide by the rules of multilateralism, they themselves had fashioned, in order to dominate the planet, in the post-war period, South Africa has shown the way towards moral leadership. We stand by President Ramaphosa’s Administration in particularly highlighting the plight of the oppressed, and in taking concrete measures to restore the rule-of-the-law in global affairs, against tendencies of racial supremacy.

We acknowledge our shortcomings as a young nation among nations. However, in this moment, it is fitting to acknowledge the positive outcome of the Summit, and make it one of the planks of the platform on which we can continue to build the nation and the region, so that the African child inherits a conflict-free future, while fully benefitting from the natural and rich endowments of the continent, where investment is based on fair-dealing and not exploitative practices.

There is a lot of work to do, on the theme of the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit of Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability. UUCSA urges the government to continue forging relations with the states of the Global South and all other willing partners that have a shared vision, as expressed in the Johannesburg Declaration, in order to turn aspirations into tangible programmes that will transform the lives of hundreds of millions of the inhabitants of the planet. The Government’s demonstrable capacity evident from the hosting of the Summit should now turn to the local front, in order to tackle backlogs in service delivery, as a matter of urgency.

UUCSA stands ready to cooperate with the government, business, civil society organisations and individuals, in areas of shared concern, in order to improve the lot of the common people, whose birthright is to live in dignity— without hunger, poverty, and disease.
